Vinification Details: From the nature-friendly cultivation of the vineyards to the care and processing of the grapes and wine, the „Reinheitsgebot”, or purity law, of the church must be obeyed. Messwein cannot be produced without the permission of the bishop, and it must be only natural and unaltered. With 12,0% alcohol (this may vary, depending on the vintage) Messwein is the lightest wine - very easy and drinkable.
History: Stift Göttweig was founded in 1083 by Saint Altmann, the bishop of Passau, and was given over to the Benedictine Order in 1094. Since that time, forestry and viticulture have formed the basis of the local economy, with the abbey always instrumental in the continuing development of wine production in the region. The Benedictine abbey Stift Göttweig is situated on the eastern perimeter of Austria's famous Wachau Valley, perched 449 meters above sea level on the southern bank of the Danube River.
Regional Information: Since 2007, the Kremstal DAC designation has been synonymous with spicy Grüner Veltliner wines and elegant, mineral-driven Rieslings, which are not only produced in a fresh, classic-to-middleweight style, but also as dense Reserve wines.
